Commercialisation

Commercialisation is a process by which intellectual property generated in public sector research institutes and institutes of higher education is taken to market or exploited within a commercial setting. It involves the outsourcing of R&D, consultancy and training, patent and license agreements and spin-off company formations. The process should generate value added in the economy and generate funds back to the university.

UTM Innovation & Commercialisation Centre was established to help researchers in the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia protect and commercialise their inventions.

UTM ICC was established by UTM  in June 2010 as a technology transfer and innovation busines entity to drive on the commercialization part of UTM’s inventions .  ICC has developed substantially over the years in a number of phases, as the technology transfer activity has grown, and with the formation of UTM Holdings and other spin-off companies.

Our mission is to be the leading international technology transfer organisation, to transfer technology and expertise from the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, to deliver value to all our clients, and to maximise social and economic benefits in a commercial manner.

ICC manages the UTM’s intellectual property portfolio, working with University researchers on identifying, protecting and marketing technologies through licensing, spin-out company formation, consulting and material sales. ICC also funds patent applications and legal costs, negotiates exploitation and spin-out company agreements, and identifies and manages consultancy opportunities. ICC works on projects from all areas of the University’s research activities: life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences and humanities.  ICC provides access and links to UTM’s expertise and provides researchers with advice on commercialisation.

Apart from the allocated Project Managers, a researcher may get ICC’s assistance to manage the activities involved in patenting, licensing and/or setting up a spin-out company.
